Important Update: New Identity Verification Requirements from 1 July 2026
From 1 July 2026, new Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) laws will apply to accounting firms, including Parallax Accounting.

These changes have been introduced by the Australian Government to help prevent money laundering, terrorism financing and other financial crimes. While these new obligations will require some additional administration, they are now a legal requirement for accounting firms providing certain services.
What does this mean for you?
For many of our existing compliance services, such as preparing tax returns or annual financial statements, you are unlikely to notice much change.
However, if you engage us for certain services, we may be legally required to complete customer due diligence before we can provide advice or commence work.
- Examples of these services include:
- Establishing or restructuring companies, trusts or other entities.
- Business, company or legal entity sales or acquisitions.
- Assisting with equity, debt or other financing arrangements.
- Providing a registered office address, business address or company secretarial services.
- Other services classified as "designated services" under the AML/CTF legislation.
If these requirements apply to your engagement, our team will guide you through the process.
What information may we need?
Depending on the type of work we are undertaking, we may ask you to provide:
- Proof of identity for individuals involved.
- Information about directors, shareholders, trustees, beneficiaries or other controlling persons.
- Copies of company constitutions, trust deeds or other governing documents.
- In some circumstances, information regarding the source of funds or wealth relating to a transaction.
To make this process as simple as possible, we may ask you to complete an online identity verification using our secure verification platform Clear AML.
Will this affect turnaround times?
In some cases, yes.
As we're legally required to complete our due diligence before providing certain services, there may be a short delay if we are waiting on identification documents or other required information.
The quicker we receive the requested information, the sooner we can get started on your work.
Why are these changes being introduced?
Accountants play an important role in establishing businesses, trusts and investment structures. Unfortunately, these services can sometimes be misused by criminals to hide the source of illicit funds or disguise ownership of assets.
The new AML/CTF reforms are designed to strengthen Australia's financial system and bring Australia into line with international standards. All accounting firms providing designated services are required to comply.
How you can help
If we request identification or additional documentation, we appreciate your prompt assistance. Providing the requested information early will help us complete our legal obligations quickly and minimise delays.
We understand these new requirements may feel unfamiliar, particularly for long-term clients. Please know that these changes are mandatory for our profession, and our team will do everything we can to make the process as smooth and straightforward as possible.
If you have any questions about the new AML/CTF requirements or how they may affect you, please don't hesitate to contact our office.
Kind regards,
The Team at Parallax Accounting
